Federer into Rotterdam semifinals
It was a packed Centre Court that welcomed Federer for his second match in the tournament. Unfortunately Youzhny pulled out of the tournament, to hand Federer a free pass to the quarters, and Federer took full advantage to beat Nieminen in straight sets.
But the Finn was certainly not outplayed. He did very well in his own service games, and took good advantage of some easy errors from Federer. But as we have seen it so many times, Federer did what was necessary. At 5-5 he eventually got the break, and served out the 1st set to win it 7-5.
But that didn´t keep Nieminen from staying in the match. He was not close in Federer´s service games though, but did well in his own. He managed to hold on until a tiebreak, but was not able to keep up with the Swiss when it really mattered. Federer got on 6-1 to reach 5 match points, and after having missed the first one, he got the next to seal the deal. A solid, yet not fantastic, performance from the former world number 1.
