Federer passes Davydenko in tough encounter
If anyone doubted that Nikolay Davydenko was on the right track back in form, they were convinced after tonight´s encounter with Roger Federer. The Russian has looked promising throughout the tournament and he started very well against Federer. At 4-4 he broke the Swiss for the first time in the tournament and was able to serve out the set. And so he did. After a long game Davydenko grabbed the opener, to put a serious amount of pressure on Federer.
But the Russian was in no mood to give anything away. He even got an early break in the second set, but Federer was able to recover with the packed Centre Court behind him. At 4-3 it was Federer´s turn to break. A solid service game banked the set for the topseed, and it could like like a fairly easy task for Federer to grab the third.
But once again Davydenko showed wat he is made of. He kept on fighting and kept on playing on a very high level. The key moment of the match arrived at 4-3 in the third for Davydenko. 0-40 and 3 breakpoints in row for the Russian. The first one was saved with a solid point from the Swiss, but on the second Davydenko had the opportunity he needed. A rather easy backhand inside the court was cramped into the net instead of into the open court down the line. Nothing had cracked Davydenko so far, but this miss was followed by two aces and eventually the game for Federer. Then the almost inivitable happend. Federer broke and was suddenly serving for the match.
And even though Davydenko took the first point of the game, Federer showed his class and ended the match with a perfect forehand down the line, outside of the Russian´s reach. A clearly releaved and happy Federer could finally celebrate his win and place in the final against Juan Martin Del Potro.
The final is played on Sunday, not before 14.00, and follows the doubles final.
