Federer to start campaign against Mahut
Roger Federer will kick off his campaign in Rotterdam against French Nicolas Mahut, who most remember for his historic encounter with John Isner in Wimbledon. Federer could face the former champion, Mikhail Youzhny, in the 2nd round. Federer is coming to Rotterdam for the first time since 2005 and is looking to bring home his second title at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament.
Youzhny is not the only former champion with a tricky draw. Michael Llodra faces 3rd seed Juan Martin Del Potro in the 1st round. 2nd seed Tomas Berdych can set up a very interesting 2nd round match against Marcos Baghdatis, if he overcomes countryman Lukas Rosol, while Baghdatis faces a qualifier in his 1st round match. Del Potro is on his way back from injury and will be determined to put in a good performance, while Tomas Berdych has shown remarkable form in the beginning of the 2012 season. The Czech is a serious candidate for the 2012 title.
Four Dutchmen are on display in the main draw. Wildcard Igor Sijsling faces Jarkko Nieminen, while Thiemo De Bakker meets 7th seed Viktor Troicki of Serbia. Should De Bakker come out on top, he could face another Dutch wildcard, Jesse Huta Galung, who is up against Ivan Ljubicic. There has been some uncertainty about Jarkko Nieminen, who is troubled by his left wrist, and it is still doubtful if he is a 100% fit for the tournament. Meanwhile Viktor Troicki is warming up for the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament with Serbia's Davis Cup tie against Sweden. The 7th seed Serb recorded a 4 set win against Michael Ryderstedt on Friday to give Serbia a 2-0 lead.
Robin Haase lines up the most interesting match featuring a Dutch player, when he takes on Nikolay Davydenko in a big 1st round clash. If Haase can beat Davydenko he could meet 4th seed Feliciano Lopez in the 2nd round, in another big encounter. Davydenko is struggling to get back on his former level, but the Russian should never be under-estimated, and Haase will most likely face a very tricky challenge. Should he prevail, Feliciano Lopez will most likely await in the 2nd round. The Spanish Davis Cup player had a great season last year, and is a tough challenge on any surface.
