Juan Martin Del Potro enters 39th ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament
After Roger Federer and Robin Haase tournament director Richard Krajicek has announced Juan Martin del Potro today as the third participant in the 39th ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament. The tournament will be played from 13 until 19 February 2012 in Ahoy Rotterdam in the Netherlands.
Richard Krajicek upon the participation of the 23 years old Argentinean: “Juan Martin Del Potro is a name that has been on my shortlist for a couple of years. After his US Open victory in 2009, we have been in contact every year, this year with a positive result. The fact that he is playing Davis Cup in Germany the week prior to the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament naturally helped us this time.”
Juan Martin Del Potro about the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament: “For the first time in years I will be playing in Europe in February. Obviously I look forward to coming to Rotterdam, after I heard a lot of great stories about the tournament from my colleagues.”
Debut in Rotterdam
Juan Martin Del Potro is making his debut in the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament. The former number four in the world won nine ATP World Tour titles in his career, with the 2009 US Open title as the most important. After having been out of competition for a large part of 2010 due to a wrist injury, he has found his way back to the top of the rankings in 2011. This year he won the tournaments of Estoril and Delray Beach and he still has a good chance of reaching the ATP World Tour Finals, to be played in London at the end of November. This week he will participate in the ATP World Tour 500 event in Valencia.
Del Potro, nicknamed ‘Delpo’ or ‘The Tower’, was the first player from Argentina since Guillermo Vilas to win the US Open. In February we will know if he is also the first Argentinean player to win the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament since Vilas won the tournament in 1982.
