Roger Federer wins the 39th ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament
It was a highly anticipated final in Ahoy today. A packed Centre Court was ready for the dream final between Roger Federer and Juan Martin Del Potro. Federer was on the hunt for his 71st career title, while Del Potro was battling for his first title since Estoril in May last year.
But Federer raced off to a great start and seemed to be living up to the high expectations from the crowd. After no more than 20 minutes Federer lead 5-0, not doing anything wrong at all. Del Potro struggled to find his rythm, as Federer did a good job mixing it up with slices and dropshots. A very different style than Berdych presented yesterday, when Del Potro crushed the Czech.
Del Potro eventually did manage to get on the scoreboard in the first set. He held serve for 1-5, only to see Federer serve out the set. It was hard to see how Del Potro could damage Federer. The former world number one did well defensively with his slice working extremely well and knew when to step in. When Federer broke Del Potro in the fifth game of the second set, to go on 3-2 it looked like the beginning to the end for Del Potro. The Argentinian did simply not manage to challenge Federer from the baseline.
At 5-3 Federer had the opportunity to close out the match. But two missed matchpoints eventually became 5-4 and then it was up to Federer himself. When Del Potro grabbed the first point there was a small glimpse of hope for Del Potro. It was soon erased by Federer, who played a couple of good points to reach 40-15 and two matchpoints. The first one was nearly gifted as Del Potro hit a backhand right on the baseline. The second one was a school example of a well constructed point. A solid first serve followed by an inside-in forehand. Del Potro only managed to get his racquet on and by then Federer was already at the net to put away the volley.
He could celebrate his 71st career title andthe fact that he has managed to win an ATP title in 12 consecutive seasons.
