Hawk-Eye
A much-discussed novelty that makes tennis even more exciting: Hawk-Eye.
Some believe Hawk-Eye to be the greatest invention in the world of tennis since the tiebreak. The Hawk-Eye system uses cameras to track the ball’s direction. The video footage is used to calculate the most likely landing spot. The system is accurate to three millimetres, and cannot be matched by the human eye. Each player is entitled to use the system three times a set. If the set goes to a tiebreak, Hawk-Eye may be used an additional time. A special video umpire decides whether the ball was in or out (using bespoke software). If the player invoking Hawk-Eye is right, he keeps his number of challenges. The video footage can also be seen by the spectators and the television audience. Hawk-Eye not only makes the game fairer, it also adds a further element of competition. After all, it will be up to the players to devise the best strategy for using the system.
