4th ABN AMRO WORLD WHEELCHAIR TENNIS TOURNAMENT
Spectacular wheelchair tennis in Ahoy

Five years ago, during the 34th ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament, wheelchair tennis players Robin Ammerlaan and Ronald Vink were playing against Richard Krajicek and Jan Siemerink on the center court of the Sports Plaza and gave a wheelchair tennis demonstration. Esther Vergeer took care of the commentary. This spectacle, accompanied with much enthusiasm from the public, led to the decision to organise the ABN AMRO World Wheelchair Tennis Tournament.

The first ABN AMRO World Wheelchair Tennis Tournament was played in 2009 and was won by Dutchman Robin Ammerlaan. Last year, Ronald Vink won the title. From the first moment the tournament was qualified as ITF1 tournament by the International Tennis Federation. Ahoy Sports Plaza created special tennis courts and has built grandstands for the wheelchair tennis.

The fourth ABN AMRO World Wheelchair Tennis Tournament will be held from 16 till 18 February 2012, during the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament. Like last year, spectacular double matches are part of the tournament. The top players in the international wheelchair tennis will come to Rotterdam to show us the highest level of wheelchair tennis.

The ABN AMRO World Wheelchair Tennis Tournament of 2012 will be headed by Tournament Director Esther Vergeer, who recently celebrated her ten-year anniversary as the world number 1 in women’s wheelchair. Esther Vergeer has won the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters last year for the thirteenth time and has become supreme in her profession, after just winning the Australian Open for the 8th time. Esther is now more than 400 matches unbeaten and has many titles written to her name. Esther herself is currently training hard for the Paralympics in London 2012.

By organising this tournament, ABN AMRO, a 1% FairShare® partner of the Fonds Gehandicaptensport, is demonstrating its continuing commitment to the promotion of wheelchair tennis. Based on the 1% FairShare® agreement, ABN AMRO allocates at least 1% of its annual sponsoring budget to sports for athletes with an impairment. In this context, ABN AMRO focuses on tennis, hockey and golf.

Scores will be published each day on this site.
